In 1998 Ian Burden recognised he could craft beautiful furniture using recycled and reclaimed wood.
When Ian began, he didn’t know how to work with recycled timber,
and neither did anyone else.
Step by step he established processes for treating the timber and finishing the wood.
He must have been doing something right, in 2002 Ian won the Best Stand at the International Furniture Fair in Singapore.
The Irish Coast collection was the first to be completed in our African Dusk finish, using a loving multi-step (nine steps in total) finishing technique.
Our tables can’t fly, but their butterfly extension wings allow another four table settings – perfect for special occasions or growing families!
Testing our creativity, we created a showroom door using skin wood, not knowing that we created an industry revolution a decade ahead of its time.
Following out almost accidental success with skin wood, we created an entire collection using the look! The Caminito collection was created as a tribute to the home of the tango.
Capturing springtime in Italy, the Tuscanspring collection was the first expression of how an uneven surface could be beautiful. It was featured on Season 3 of the Great Australian Bake Off.
After 10 months of development, our Quick To Assemble (QTA) bedding system
changed the way we looked at furniture assembly as they can be assembled in just two minutes.
This bedding system is now IP protected.
Keeping ahead of trends, we introduced the newest look, a light skin wood finish.
The wood grain shined like never before.
White finishes always hide the wood grain, we created a brushing technique to complement the unique characteristics of the design!
To our processes even more sustainable, we introduced a water-based finish. The transition process took two years, and our factory is now cleaner than ever before.
Ian met his wife Yun Burden in 2003 and they married two years later. Over the last 15 years, Ian and Yung have devoted their lives to creating ‘Furniture with heart’. Yung is now PGT-Reclaimed’s Brand and R&D Director, and leads the innovative program to move finishes to 100% water-based materials.
Our people are the foundation of our success. It is their hands that craft the furniture, their dedication that ensures our high standards of production and their good spirits that make the company a fun and exciting place to work.
A high percentage of our recycled wood is pine, mainly because pine is used to make packing crates. Although it is the fastest-growing plantation tree in the world, it still takes between twenty-five and forty years for a pine to grow large enough to be economically harvested.
